The Hugh C. Williams High School hosted a Model Congress simulation on Friday, Feburary 26, 2010. Students experienced the legislative process from the committee stage to the floor stage in the US Senate. Of particular interest was the role of the filibuster in the so-called “60-Vote-Senate.” Bills from three committees, including the Armed Services Committee (PTSD), Environment and Public Works Committee (Coal) and the Health Education Labor and Pensions [HELP] Committee (Rights of Non-traditional Couples) were discussed. Students winning recognition for their efforts included Nicole Potter, Pat Dean, and Patrick McGaw from the Environmental Committee; Emily Sweeney, Sophie Goobic, Alyssa Hampson and Thressa Zimmerman from Armed Services; and Greg Perry and Matt Barnes from the HELP Committee.Participants included 65 students from several groups at Canton Central, along with members of Mr Dan Sullivan-Catlin’s government classes at Norwood-Norfolk Central School. Canton participants included the AP Government class, which took a leading role in the background research, topic selection, and event organization; the AP Environmental class; the Model UN club; and several 8th grade pages from Mrs. Halloran’s social studies classes. |
