Canton Central School Bids Welcome to You... and to Spring!

First, a note of thanks to all who provided feedback on the first edition of The District Newsletter.  The response was overwhelmingly positive!  Once you have had the opportunity to peruse this edition, I invite you once again to share comments with us via email at ccsdmailbox@ccsdk12.org. I also ask that you let us know if there are folks not receiving the Newsletter who should be, or if you would prefer to view it online and forgo the mailing.

Attendance Discussion Continued...

We also received several comments and recommendations regarding the essay, The Importance of School Attendance, presented in the February-March edition.  Those comments and recommendations are being considered by the District Committee as it examines our attendance policy and practices, with an eye cast toward making some recommendations for policy improvement to the Board of Education.  Thanks to those who contributed!  In this edition, we have included the “Good News” part of the attendance story—those students who have perfect attendance thus far in the school year.  A special note of congratulations to these students and their parents and guardians!

Why a Dean of Students?

At a recent meeting of the Board of Education, a community member asked, “Why do we need a Dean of Students at the High School?”  and “What is the High School Principal doing?”  These are fair questions—questions I believe merit a detailed response.  In order to fully address this inquiry, we must explore the major responsibilities of both the Dean of Students and the Principal.  As you will note, both have roles when it comes to school discipline, though this is the area where the Dean spends the majority of his time.

But before exploring these roles further, I believe it would be instructive to share with you excerpts from “The State of School Discipline” report provided to the Board of Education by the building principals. (continued on page 13)

 Banford Character Kids

“Character Kids” are children who have been noted by Banford Faculty and Staff as being particularly RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, COOPERATIVE, SAFE, KIND, HELPFUL and UNDERSTANDING.  Congratulations to the forty-seven students whose names  appear on page 4 of this  Newsletter.

         WAY TO GO!!

We hope that all elementary students achieve this distinction on one or more occasions during their formative years in Banford.       (continued on page 5)

Celebrating Good Citizens

One of McKenney Middle School’s  many long-standing traditions is that of regularly recognizing those students who epitomize the concept of good citizenship by their words and actions.  Each month in Grades 4 and 5 and each quarter in Grades 6, 7, and 8, students are chosen by their teachers and principal to be acknowledged as Citizens of the Month/Quarter in a student assembly to which parents/guardians and guest speakers are invited.

State FFA Convention        Coming to Canton

Canton’s Hugh C. Williams Senior High School will serve as the host site for the New York State FFA Convention to be held from May 1st through May 3rd, 2008.  The convention promises to bring over 1200 high school students, advisors, chaperones, and dignitaries and guests to Canton and the larger St. Lawrence County community.                       (continued on page 12)

Spotlight On…  CCS Libraries

National Library Week is in April, a perfect time for an update on our district’s libraries, or Learning Resource Centers (LRCs). Each school features its own library with collections focused on the mission of that school. LRC Media Specialists Nancy Palmateer (Elementary), Cindy Cubley (Middle), Kelly Wilson (High), and library aides Ann Zimmer and Carol Clemmer provide our 1700 students and faculty with the resources they need.
