The Canton Central School recognizes its responsibility to promote the health, welfare and safety of students as well as staff and visitors.  Research shows that secondhand smoke exposure impairs a child’s ability to learn, putting him/her at increased risk of difficulties with reading and math. Tobacco related health complications are major contributors to missed school days by students. In light of this information, Canton Central School is reviewing its Tobacco Policy to make school a safe environment for its students.

Ten Good Reasons to have a 100% Tobacco-Free School policy:

Provides positive adult role models for students.

Protects children from developing and addiction to tobacco.

Provides a healthier environment for students and staff by reducing exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke.

Reinforces and supports classroom instruction and other prevention efforts.

Changes the norms regarding tobacco use,

Counteracts the targeting of children by the tobacco industry.

Complies with State and Federal laws prohibiting smoking in school buildings.

Prepares students for tobacco-free workplaces and communities.

Protects schools from the risk of future liability by prohibiting smoking on school premises.

Reduces the risk of fires due to smoking materials.

Early surveys in 2005 show that adults in New York support smoke free environments. Because of these findings,

we feel it is necessary to stress the importance of our tobacco policy and ask for your help in keeping our district

tobacco, alcohol, and drug-free. Your compliance and respect of our policy will be greatly appreciated.
