CCSD District Newsletter            April-June 2008

Multiple copies of books are obtained through a $500 grant from the Canton Community Fund and inter-library loan. “It would be great if we could have a book group for each grade in the Middle School,” Ms. Kepes said.  “We need more parent or community volunteers.  It’s already organized and is an excellent opportunity to share a love of books.”Ms. Kathy Duffany leads a book group for 8th graders one evening a month at the Canton Free Library.   For more information, contact Betsy Kepes at 386-8489 or Cindy Cubley, at 386-8561, extension 317.

Pages Book Discussion

If you were to stop in the Banford LRC any Tuesday around 11:00 am, you would find a group of third grade students sharing lunch and books.  The discussion is volntary on the part of the students and teachers who join Mrs. Palmateer each week to discuss a single book or several books about a similar theme.  Most recently, Math Curse, by Jon Scieszka, The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush, by Tomie dePaola, and The Talking Eggs, by Robert San Souci have been the focus of some very lively discussions

Middle School Lunchtime Book Groups

The back room of the Middle School LRC is crowded with lunch trays, books, and talkative readers on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  The lunchtime book groups are led by parent volunteers Betsy Kepes and Teresa Brownell.  Each week, students read half a book and, in between bites, the group talks about plot, setting, writing style, and the best moments in each novel. “These kids are amazing readers,” said Betsy Kepes.  “Through discussion we try to discover what each author is telling us.  The students are learning to be critical readers and connoisseurs of fine children’s literature.”

             Battle of the Books

Excitement is mounting in the McKenney Middle School over the approaching Battle of the Books competition.  Valerie White, Canton Free Library children’s librarian, and Cindy Cubley, McKenney School librarian encourage any combination of fourth through sixth graders to form a team of four, find a coach, and tackle the reading list of thirty books.  Teams must register at the Canton Free Library by April 5th.  A Battle of the Books bash will be held in the LRC on Thursday, April 3rd, for all teams and coaches. The competition begins on May 10th at 10:30 at the Canton Free Library.  Lunch is provided for all participants.  The winning team will compete at a regional competition on May 31st.  Please feel free to contact Valerie White at 386-3712, ext. 4 or Cindy Cubley at 386-8561, ext. 317 for further information.

Online Databases @ your library

Our Learning Resource Centers extend beyond the walls of our buildings. Students, faculty, staff and community members have access to several online databases.  These databases include magazine and professional journal articles, links to curriculum appropriate websites, and reference e-books.  You can access these databases from any Internet connected computer at any time, day or night.  Each of the LRCs has a link from the Canton Central webpage.  From there, click on Student Links/Teacher Links to find each of the databases.  At school, the links will take you directly to the resources; from outside, you will need to have passwords that are available in each library.
