CANTON CENTRAL SCHOOL
COACHING MANUAL
CODE
OF BEHAVIOR FOR COACHES
- Set
an example both on and off the playing area of sound personal values
and good sportsmanship.
- Recognize
that athletic competition is a means toward an end, not an end in
itself. Specifically,
athletics should lead to the development of healthy, well-adjusted
young men and women.
- Approach
competition as a healthy and constructive exercise, not as a life
and death struggle that requires victory at any price.
Competition should be fun and enjoyable.
- Recognize
that the participation in individual or team sports are young men
and women with human frailties and limitations who are capable of
making mistakes.
- Be
prepared to win. A poor winner is no more acceptable than a bad loser is
and the participants should be instructed accordingly.
- Be
positive.
- Be
prepared to lose. In each contest, somebody must be a loser.
Winning is not the only thing.
Instruct the players that when one does his best, there is no
shame in losing.
- By
personal attitude and behavior command the respect and affection of
the players.
- Be
well groomed. Personal appearance is an indication of self-respect and
helps set the tone for individual or team performance.
- Do
not use crude or abusive language with players, opponents, officials
or spectators.
- Respect
the judgment of the officials.
Although it is reasonable for the coach to question
officials’ decisions, even disagree, the officials’ decisions
must be accepted graciously. Questionable
decisions may be referred to the Section X Sports Coordinator.
- Do
not bait or harass officials by word or action.
If dissatisfied with an official, use the rating system to
register dissatisfaction.
- In
game situations, avoid behavior that will incite players, opponents
or spectators.
- Instruct
the players to respect the officials and not to argue, demonstrate
or be abusive. Any questions with officials concerning rules
interpretation should be made by captain or coach.
- Instruct
players in the elements of good sportsmanship and remove players
from competition who demonstrate unsportsmanship behavior.
