COACHES’ RESPONSIBILITY CHECKLIST

AND SELF EVALUATION

I.   PRE-SEASON RESPONSIBILITIES

            1. Attend pre-season coaches’ meeting.

2. Be familiar with Canton’s coaching manual on school web site at www.ccsdk12.org.

3. Make sure First Aid and CPR certificates are updated and on file in the Athletic         Office.  (Must meet NYS requirements.)

4. Submit the following to the Athletic Director’s Office:

a. Practice schedule (may require meeting with other coaches.

b. Goals and objectives for your team.

c. All volunteers in your program must be BOE approved and need to have on file coaching credentials.

d. Special maintenance work orders for fields, gymnasium and equipment: check the area to be used.

e. Special requests for home matches, practices and meets.

f.  Make sure all equipment is ready for the start of the season.  Check equipment needed for the first few days of practice.  Notify Athletic Director of potential shortfalls.

g. All ordering should be done in advance of the season.  Guideline-when one season starts, the upcoming season should be doing it’s preparation and review. (the sooner the better)

h. Provide a transportation schedule-changes will be made as necessary.

i.  Medical kit for restocking.

II.   IN-SEASON RESPONSIBILITIES

1.   All students must turn in a medical parent permission form before participating in a practice session.

2.   Return your roster form information sheet after the first two weeks of practice.  They should be in the athletic office no later than that.  Notify the Athletic Director of changes.

3.   Provide a checklist which explains procedures for “cutting” (ex. Skills, fitness components, attitude).  Send a copy to the athletic office.

4.   Hold a parent/athlete meeting to review eligibility rules, team rules, practice schedules, and handout Athletic Handbook.  This is required!

5.  Follow guidelines for individual and team practices recommended by N.Y.S.P.H.S.A.A.

6.  Prepare daily practice schedules following the 2 hour time limit recommendation for the length of practice.

7.  Supervise athletes from the time they report to the time they leave practice.  At no time should athletes be unsupervised.

8.  Post your schedule.  Promote your sport!

9.  Secure practice sites, locker rooms and equipment before you leave.

10. Make request to principal and athletic director for teams to be excused for athletic contests.

11. Review expectations and rules with all students (include transportation regulations and procedures).

12. Check eligibility status, monitor academic eligibility throughout season.

13. Fill out accident report forms and turn them into the nurse within 24 hours.  Report all injuries.  Parents/guardian notification.

14. Follow the safety procedures when dealing with injuries, use infection control regulations, weather guidelines and lightening procedures.

15. Check medical kit frequently.  Provide a list of needed items at the end of the day and request stocking prior to the next practice.

16. Promote sportsmanship at all levels.  Coaches should set the example.

17. Cooperate and work with all coaches on the staff.

18. Report all contest results to the media (Varsity only).

19. Promote with your athletes the importance of good attendance and good grades.  Keep in touch with where they are.

20. All fund raising activities must be cleared through the appropriate channels (athletic director and building principal).

21. Confirm preparations regarding the facility, equipment, special requests, and personnel the day before a home contest.  (the sooner the better)

22. Promote the total program by showing an interest and attending other contests.

23. Submit all schedule changes in writing to the Athletic Office.

24. Attend scheduled coaches’ meetings throughout the season.

25. Send team roster with uniform numbers, positions, etc. to other scheduled league schools.

26. Return all forms when requested!

27. Know where the nearest AED is.  (Must be within 3 – 5 minutes of practice or game)

 

III.  POST SEASON RESPONSIBILITIES

1.  Complete the end of season report which includes award winners, team record, individuals receiving letters and pins.

2.  Complete equipment inventory list and equipment storage with the Director.

3.  Provide a requisition for budget items for next year.

4.  Recommendations for program improvement such as scheduling, field  work, staff, etc.

5.  Awards presented to athletes at the end of the season.

6.  Return keys at the end of the season – where applicable.

7.  Set up a meeting with the Athletic Director within two weeks of your completed season – review goals, expectations and evaluations.

 

Each item should be checked as where applicable and dated.
